Quinoa & chickpea burgers

I make these burgers whenever I have leftover quinoa, they are so easy to make and a great meatless option that still contain a lot of protein within them. I love serving them with some homemade caramelised onion, sweet potato chips and a dollop of paleo mayo!

Makes 8 large patties


  • 1 can chickpeas, drainedQBIMG_0759
  • 1 cup Flahavan oats
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoon ground coriander
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne powder (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon of Himalayan salt & black pepper
  • 2 cups cooked quinoa
  • 1 large carrot grated
  • ½ large zucchini, grated
  • 1 small onion, finely sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 free range egg
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon good quality balsamic vinegar
  • Zest of 1 lemon and juice of ½ lemon
  • A handful of parsley, chopped
  • ¼ cup coconut flour
  • Olive oil to cook


  • Prepare all your ingredients before you begin.
  • In a food processor add the drained can of chickpeas with the ground cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper and oats and blitz until it is a smooth paste.
  • In a large mixing bowl, place the 2 cups of cooked quinoa, lemon zest and juice, carrots, zucchini, onion, garlic, mustard, balsamic vinegar, egg, parsley and coconut flour. Give it a big stir and then add in the chickpea mixture from the blender.
  • Make sure all the ingredients are well combined.
  • Divide the mixture into 8 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty.
  • Place the patties on a piece of baking paper, cover and allow to sit in the fridge for an hour before cooking. Chilling the patties will help them hold together during the cooking process.
  • Once refrigerated, remove from the fridge and place the patties in a hot saucepan with some good quality olive oil. Allow to cook on a medium to low heat for about 4 minutes each side!
  • Serve on a bed of rocket with your favourite chutney and mayo!

Bali’s best plant based cafes!

I am very lucky to be able to call the beautiful island of Bali home. My mum lives in Bali so every time I visit her, I am fortunate enough to dine at some of the best restaurants and cafes on the tropical island! Although I am a meat eater, I thoroughly enjoy eating plant based meals on a regular basis. I spend a lot of time in Bali each year and find I frequently have a lot of people asking me for my foodie tips. So here are my top 6 plant based cafes in Bali.

Peloton Supershop – Located in Berawa

Peloton is a trendy vegan café in Berawa (located between Seminyak and Canggu). It has a wide variety of food on the menu that would appeal to not only vegans but meat eaters too.  Peloton has a really great vibe, the staff are all so friendly and welcoming from the minute you walk in and the food is consistently good.  The portions are large and the menu is creative ranging from smoothie bowls, tacos, salads, burgers, lasagne and much more! There really is something about this place, the vegan food is absolutely delicious and the coffee with their homemade coconut milk is out of this world.  No wonder it is always so busy – clearly a very popular spot with expats, locals and of course tourists. Pictured is their green smoothie bowl with a mangosteen shot and coconut latte.

Kynd community – Located in Seminyak

This cute, trendy pink café in Seminyak is divine! Kynd Café will make anyone fall in love with vegan food, the smoothie bowls are out of this world and always beautifully presented as are the salad bowls. I have been to Kynd several times and almost every time I have been, people are clicking away on their phones taking pictures of the beautifully presented food  – it will put a smile on anyone’s face, as it doesn’t only look phenomenal but tastes great too!

The Shady Shack – Located in Canggu (vegetarian)

I love going to the Shady Shack for a nice, quiet, healthy lunch whilst sitting in their tropical garden. The menu provides a range of options which makes it really hard to choose from. One things for sure is that all the food is nutritious, beautifully presented and you can’t go wrong! The relaxed atmosphere and gorgeous setting makes for the perfect place to unwind in and enjoy some fresh tasting food. I have eaten numerous meals at The Shady Shack and I am yet to find something I don’t like – the wraps are very delicious as is the jack fruit burger!  Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.

The Spicy Coconut – Located in Batubelig (between Seminyak and Berawa)

The Spicy Coconut is the perfect spot to refresh yourself and escape the heat for an hour. I have only ever enjoyed the smoothie bowls at The Spicy Coconut but each one I have had has been spot on, beautifully presented with great customer service! This eco-friendly café’s simple interiors and colourful food will make anyone feel at home.

Down to Earth – Located in Seminyak and Ubud

If you are looking for really healthy food in Bali, then Down to Earth is the place for you. The menu is extensive and the atmosphere chilled and inviting. The seitan burger is a win as is the roasted vegetables rosemary tofu wrap! I love their coconut kefir, smoothies and Kombuchas to quench my thirst on a hot day.  They also have a mini super market were you can pick up an array of supplements, beauty products, packaged superfoods and snacks as well as takeaway raw treats.


Alchemy – Located In Ubud & they have a small branch in Seminyak at Potato Head

The raw salad bar followed by a raw cake or two is the ultimate lunch combo! Nice sized portions, top quality, tasty food in a very relaxed atmosphere! I would have lunch over breakfast at Alchemy though as the menu is more varied at lunch time and the portions larger. There is even a shop inside the café where you can stock up on natural beauty products, supplements and health food products. This review is based in the Ubud location.



Charred broccolini salad

Char grilled broccolini with peas, caramelized onion served with a zesty lemon, honey, tahini dressing!

Serves 4


600 grams broccoliniIMG_1498

2 tbsp olive oil

Himalyan salt and pepper

1 large red onion

1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

250grams frozen peas

40 grams tahini (sesame paste)

2tsp honey

4 tsp lemon juice

1 clove of garlic, minced

½ cup of water

2 tsp white sesame seeds



  • Bring a saucepan of water to the boil with a pinch of salt
  • Once boiled, blanch the broccolini for about 3 min
    tes until al dente.
  • Drain the broccolini and set aside to dry out
  • Next thinly slice the red onion and place in a hot pan with 1 tbsp of the olive oil, the balsamic vinegar and a pinch of salt. Allow the onions to caramelize on a low heat for about 5 minutes, keep an eye on them and stir every now and again.
  • Place the frozen peas in the microwave and defrost
  • Once the broccolini has dried out, place in a bowl with the remaining tbsp. of oil and salt and pepper. Mix through.
  • Place a griddle pan on the heat and allow to get really hot. Place the brocoolini in the pan with the defrosted peas and allow the veg to char.
  • To make the dressing, place the tahini, honey, garlic and lemon in a bowl and mix through. Next add the water and keep whisking until it becomes a thick smooth consistency.
  • To serve, mix the broccolini, peas and onion in a bowl and place on a serving platter. Dress with the tahini sauce and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  • Enjoy with family and friends!
